I wrote this about Pat Sullivan last year. He’s as humble and gracious as you’ve heard and was quick to point out that winning the Heisman is about the fraternal relationships and the way the award marks you and the sense of notoriety and obligation that come along with it:

“The trophy comes up. Sullivan downplays how it might be mentioned when he’s recruiting young players to join him at Samford, conceding that “occasionally” something may be said, but notes high school students are more “in the moment people.” ”
At the end of our interview I said “Coach, what’s that ring you’re wearing?”
“Oh, that’s the Heisman ring.”
I’m sure no one ever notices it on his hand. 🙂
