Tigers in the NFL: Week One

The pressure is still on.

Week 1 had the NFL on the verge of some epic upsets on Monday night until the Bills fumbled the game away and the Raiders ran out of gas.

Quarterbacks

Jason Campbell #17, started for the Washington Redskins and had a better than advertised game.  Campbell has been relentlessly hounded by the media … and the “highlights” show him having a terrible day, but the numbers tell a different story: 19 of 26 passing (73.1 percent) for 211 yards, 1 TD and 1 Int. The Giants have arguably the best defensive line in football, harassed him all day behind a subpar offensive line and forced a fumble that ended up being a defensive TD.  Campbell has got to make better decisions and not hold onto the football too long when he’s facing a great pass rush.  Still the ‘Skins kept it close in the Meadowlands, 23-17

Running Backs

Ronnie Brown #23, started for the Miami Dolphins and ran the ball 10 times for 43 yards (and caught it three times for 9 yards) in a loss to the Atlanta Falcons 19-7.

Heath Evans #44, starting fullback for the Saints, did not record a rushing stat but blocked like a beast to lead his 3rd string tailback to 143 yards on the day. Evans also caught four passes for 35 yards and had a TD in the Saints’ 45-27 win.

Tony Richardson #49, starting fullback for the New York Jets, had one carry for two yards but like Heath led his tailback to a nice 107 yards and 2 TDs in the Jets impressive 24-7 win over the Texans.

Carnell Williams #24, Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter, had 97 yards and a TD on 13 (mostly first half ) carries, but the Bucs had to pass and play catch up in the loss to the Cowboys, 34-21.

Brandon Jacobs #27, New York Giants running back, had 16 carries for 46 yards and two catches for 17 in the win over the Redskins, 23-17.

Tre Smith #32 is on Injured Reserved with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Tristan Davis #43 is on the Detroit Lions practice squad.

Wide Recievers

Devin Aromashadu #19 was not active for the Chicago Bears thanks to a pulled quad.

Ben Obamanu #87 had one catch for 11 yards in the Seahawks’ dominating 28-0 win over the Rams.

Prechae Rodriguez #85 is a starter for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and had four catches for 30 yards in the Tiger-Cats 30-18 win over the BC Lions.  Prechae has 44 catches for 486 yards and 3 TDs on the season.

Offensive Lineman

Ben Grubbs #66 started at LG for the Baltimore Ravens in their 38-24 win over the Chiefs.

Marcus McNeill #73 started at LT for the San Diego Chargers in their Monday night 24-20 win over the Raiders.

King Dunlap #65 is second string LT and RT for the Philadelphia Eagles after an injury to Shaun Andrews, Dunlap is currently a little banged up with an elbow injury.

Tyronne Green #69 is second string for the San Diego Chargers who are only carrying eight offensive lineman at the moment, which makes it even more shocking that Green was inactive Monday night.

Kendall Simmons #71 is injured and inactive for the Patriots with an Achilles injury he suffered last season when he was with the Steelers.

Tim Duckworth #75 is on the Saints’ practice squad.

Defensive Lineman

Jay Ratliff #90 started for the Dallas Cowboys and had two tackles plugging up the middle in a 34-21 win over the Bucs.

Quentin Groves #54 is rumored to be starting this week for the Jaguars over fellow second year DE Derrick Harvey. The Jags are, once again, very secretive about their depth chart. Groves had four tackles and forced a fumble of Joseph Addai in the Jags’ 14-12 loss to the Colts.

Spencer Johnson #91 is listed as the second string defensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills but played a good bit in the heartbreaking loss to New England on Monday night.  Johnson had two tackles and is a little banged up with a thigh injury.

Pat Sims #90 had four tackles playing in a reserve role in an ugly game that the Bengals lost to the Broncos, 12-7.

Sen’Derrick Marks #94 is currently listed third at his defensive tackle spot with the Tennessee Titans and was inactive in their Thursday night loss to the Steelers in OT.  No word yet on whether he will play this weekend, but his ankle sprain is no longer listed on the team injury report.

Stanley McClover #75 is still on Injured Reserve for the Houston Texans.

Linebackers

Karlos Dansby #58 started for the Cardinals and had six tackles and a pass deflection in their 20-16 loss to the 49ers.

Takeo Spikes #51 started in the middle for the 49ers in their 20-16 win over the Cardinals but did not record a stat.

Will Herring #54 has been elevated to a starting position in Seattle at the outside LB spot that veteran Leroy Hill vacated due to injury.  Herring had two tackles and a pass deflection after being inserted for Hill in the Seahawks’ dominating 28-0 win over the Rams.

Reggie Torbor #53 did not record a stat in Miami’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons, 19-7.

Tray Blackmon #30 is still fifth in team tackles for the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders despite being on (surprise) Injured Reserve.

Cornerbacks

Carlos Rogers #22 started for the Redskins and had one tackle and two pass deflections in their 23-17 loss to the Giants.

Jonathan Wilhite #24 played in the nickel spot for the Patriots and had four tackles and a pass deflection in the win over the Bills, 25-24. Wilhite was responsible for covering Terrell Owens on the Bills final drive. Owens caught one pass for 11-ish yards.

Jerraud Powers #25 got the late nod to start for the Colts in their 14-12 win over the Jaguars. Powers started at RCB and recorded four tackles, two solo, and deflected two passes in his first NFL appearance.

Pat Lee #22 is on Injured Reserve with the Green Bay Packers.

Kevin Hobbs #23 was picked up late last week by the Detroit Lions and elevated to the 53-man roster very late but was not active for the Lions this past weekend.

Rod Hood after starting for the Super Bowl runner-up Cardinals is still out of a job this week.

Kickers

Robert Bironas #2 was off his game with the Titans in a 13-10 loss to the Steelers on Thursday night. Bironas was successful once out of three field-goal tries. The one he made was for 45 yards; the other two were a miss and a block.

Damon Duval #15 is kicking and punting for Montreal in the CFL and is still a perfect 30/30 on PATs and 25/31 on field goals this year after performance of two field goals and three PATs against British Columbia. He had seven punts with a 43.4 average in that game.

Updates

I was asked about Kenny Irons last week and it appears he may be calling it a career.  He has not been able to recover from the ACL injury he suffered two years ago.

Questions? Comments?  Anyone you want to know about that’s not listed?  Let me know and I’ll have it up next week! Let me know at [email protected] and I’ll have it up next week!
