When Terri Williams-Flournoy was first offered the job as head women’s basketball coach at Auburn University, she probably didn’t picture her first win with the Tigers coming on the other side of the world at about 7:30 a.m. CST.
But that’s exactly what happened on Friday. The Tigers gave Williams-Flournoy her first orange-and-blue victory — albiet in an exhibition — defeating the Cairns Dolphins club team 81-71 in Cairns, Australia
The win was a part of Auburn’s four-game tour Down Under, pitting the Tigers against Australian professional teams. The win boosts Auburn’s record to 1-1 in exhibition play, after their loss to the Logan Thunder earlier in the week.
Blanche Alverson led the Tigers with 23 points in the win against Cairns, knocking down five 3-pointers from beyond the arc.
Hasina Muhammed added 16 points for Auburn, to go along with her 24-point performance in the exhibition-opener.
The Auburn bigs were also critical in the victory, as Nicole Tanner scored 8 points and Peyton Davis added 7. Or as Cairns fans put it:
You can hear Williams-Flournoy discuss the victory over Cairns here. You can follow the Tigers on the final few days of their trip by checking out their Australian Tour blog here.
The Tigers will next take on the Sydney Uni Flames in New South Wales tonight. The Flames are owned and sponsored by Sydney University, but the team is still comprised of professional players. The Flames compete in the WNBL — Australia’s premier professional women’s basketball league and the same league home to the Logan Thunder, who knocked off Auburn earlier in the week.
The game against the Flames will give Auburn fans stateside their best chance on the Australian Tour to follow along with a game, as the early-afternoon matchup in Australia is set for a 10 p.m. tip-off CST.
Sydney Uni’s preview of the game can be found here.
