NYC Auburn Club to host Heisman Tiger Walk

More than 500 Tiger fans poured out into the streets of Manhattan last weekend and hit “Tiny Toomer’s” on 3rd Avenue after the SEC Championship. Many of them rolled one very loved tree.

A Tree's Rolled in Brooklyn. (Manhattan, but still.)

This week the NYC Auburn Club, an alumni group in New York City, wants to try something different but also an Auburn fan staple: a Tiger Walk. The spin? It’s for Cam Newton, his guest* Coach Gene Chizik and President Jay Gogue as they head into the Best Buy Theater to pick up some Heisman hardware.

The 2010 Heisman award ceremony is taking place at the Best Buy Theater at 1515 Broadway this Saturday evening.

The alumni club has the university’s blessing for the NYC Heisman Tiger Walk, according to Micah Latter, the New York City club president.

“It’s going to be a really short walk, just like the Tiger Walk in Auburn, or the one they had at Alabama where they waiting for the bus and just cheered on the guys like a regular Tiger Walk,” Latter said. “That’s the idea we have in mind.

“People are bringing shakers, posters,” Latter said. “We’ll get there before him and coach will be there and we heard he’s bringing his four lineman [* as his guest] since he can’t bring his family. I’m expecting there won’t be time for him to stop and shake hands, but we’ll still be there to just be supporting.”

If you live along the East Coast (or, hell, want to take a spur-of-the-moment trip to The City That Never Sleeps) you are certainly welcome to take part in the fun, according to Latter.

“We’ve gotten e-mails from people in D.C. who are coming up and the Philly chapter is sending people up and it’s going to be a good response,” she said. “It’s not necessarily a New York club thing; it’s just that this is awesome, and Cam’s going to be here, and we’re going to support him.”

Here’s the details/timeline from the club for this Saturday’s festivities:

5:15 p.m. EST — NYC Auburn Club members meet at Champs Sports at the corner of 42nd and 7th Ave in Times Square.

5:30 p.m. — Club members walk two blocks to the Best Buy Theater (1515 Broadway), where the Heisman ceremony takes place.

5:45-6ish p.m. — Cam, his guest(s), coach and President Gogue are expected to arrive for the 2010 Heisman ceremony.

Please join us for an “ALL IN” Tiger Walk and bring posters, shakers … whatever you feel is appropriate to show your Auburn pride and support.

After the Tiger Walk, club members can watch the Heisman at 8 p.m. at one of our two Heisman watch locations. A Times Square bar that is to be determined or Bar 515 (www.bar515.com) at 34th Street and 3rd Avenue.

Bama students vandalized their own campus with Auburn graffiti before the 1953 Iron Bowl

In 1953, a Bama student, either out of self-loathing, or in an attempt to rile his team to victory in the upcoming Iron Bowl, painted not just random doors and alleys of his own campus with Auburn slogans, but Denny freakin' Chimes. So when someone tries to stop you from relieving yourself on the Saban statue at this year's game, just tell them: "I learned it from watching you."
