Well……….eh. I’ll reserve judgement on Roof until he gets some help in the secondary.
Cat, you have to admit, though, that he makes effective adjustments in scheme to produce adequate results as the game goes on.
I often think poor defensive play at the beginning completely obscures the effectivness of second half play in many fans’ minds. But really, think back on the important stops made by the defense in these latest games.
You don’t win 11 games if your defense is the worst. It really hit home to me in the LSU game when we made those critical stops on third and fourth downs.
In fact, I knew in the Georgia game when they had to settle for a field goal that the game was ours. The defense had arrived and we never looked back over our shoulders after that.
Yeah, frankly, Roof may be effin’ fantastic. We’re still really thin, we have like 3 honest to God CBs, followed by a bunch of freshmen converts from QB. That’s not so hot. And our safeties are not plentiful, either. To be able to do what we’ve done in the second half all season is probably wizardry of the highest order. For Malzahn to go nuts with the talent he has access to on O, no big surprise (although he too can do more with less), but for Roof to hold it together (somehow) … and with the very obvious track record of adjustment … he is a lot better than I think people give credit for. And the position coaches beneath him, too.
Rocker needs to grab ahold of some necks, though, and keep those guys in line. No need to get ejected like that.
I swear Roof’s defenses play “rope a dope” until the fourth quarter. You cannot convince me otherwise. Our defense rules the 4th.
I really think AU’s defensive game plan comes in 3 parts.
1st half Trying it all out, see what works. Man, zone, diff looks, blitzes combinations of players. Rotate lots of D line to wear down/beat up their O-Line.
3rd Qtr, Halftime adjustments/ Fine tune, see who’s playing best.
4th Qtr, best of what you’ve got. Shut em all down.
Just looking at the way they’ve played so far, i kind of think that’s the plan they follow.
