Nancy was my first First Lady, the first I remember at least. Just Say No. Mr. T. Alf. She was awesome.
In early May 1976, she stopped in Auburn during a short campaign swing through the Heart of Dixie (whose Republicans supported her husband more than Gerald Ford) in advance of the May 4 primary elections in Georgia, Nebraska, and Indiana.
She spent the night in Auburn Friday night and held a press conference at a hotel Saturday, the day of the Texas Republican primary, which the Great Auburn Fan swept. After the press conference, she spoke and signed autographs at a reception held at the N. College Street home of Mrs. Alice Gary Gibson.
“I think my husband’s campaign has been healthy for the country,” Mrs. Reagan told 120 or so supporters (why yes, that is Guy Hunt). ” I think the nomination will not be decided until Kansas City. Neither candidate will have majority of delegates. We will have to wait until the convention to finally decide the nomination.”
I recently scanned a zillion of never-before-seen photos shot at both events by a former Opelika-Auburn News photographer. Here are 30 of them.
