The Auburn of 64 years ago would be ashamed of us. Sure, we have flags and fireworks. “But how,” Auburn Mayor Louie James and L.O. Brackeen and other members of the city’s Inter-Club Council who handled the 1956 Independence Day celebration would ask, “can you celebrate this country’s birthday without tanks and guns downtown and a spy plane landing at the airport and without a military helicopter (somehow) landing at Toomer’s Corner? Oh, and jets buzzing the city?”
