We haven’t had a Harry Potter meets Auburn post in a while, so this is good.
The first ever Granger Leadership Academy will be held in Auburn next month. That’s Granger, as in Harry Potter heroine Hermione Granger, as in the community organizer most revered by The Harry Potter Alliance, “an army of fans, activists, nerdfighters, teenagers, wizards and muggles dedicated to fighting for social justice with the greatest weapon we have– love.”
A division of that army—the Harry Potter Alliance AUrors—has been officially deployed in Auburn (with AU’s full organizational blessing) since early 2012, holding book drives, toy drives, food drives and other noble endeavors worthy of praise, and apparently the attention of HPA HQ.
“We weren’t able to book the conference center at Hogwarts,” reads the location announcement for the conference on the HPA website, “but we’re very excited to confirm that Granger Leadership Academy will be hosted by The Hotel at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama! Like Hogwarts, Auburn University is a magical school that’s located a bit off the beaten path.”

“We selected Auburn as our first-year host for Granger Leadership Academy primarily because the Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center met all our qualifications for an ideal conference venue,” Harry Potter Alliance Chapter’s Director Matt Maggiacomo told TWER. “We feel the surrounding community of Auburn will provide a great setting for our attendees.”
What will attendees actually be up to? Workshops, community building activities, and other “dynamic training based on the Social Change Model of Leadership Development.”
The conference will be held Oct. 17-19—don’t bother, we already looked. It’s that second bye week. Good planning on their part, but still kind of a shame—the interaction between quidditch-crazed wizards and pigskin-crazed muggles would no doubt give us our next several Harry Potter meets Auburn posts.
