Via my absolute favorite Auburn spirit site. And one of my favorite Auburn books. No kidding. There’s a reason why I wanted TWER to have an illustrated tiger too. Aubie is Auburn spirit in ink. War Eagle!
Fulltime: The game is over… and guess what – Cam is still Cam. (And the kids still love him).
You want proof? Do you?
Ben and I are truly disappointed that our Auburn Tigers — all of them: Dyer, McCalebb, Shoulderpads Adams, Ziemba, T-Zac, Woody Paramore, Neil Caudle, Ryan Shoemaker, Mario Fannin, all of them — did not get 700 yards (had Justin managed to write a Friday Preview, I’m sure he would have said “Failure is: Less than 700 yards”). Because this game… sheesh, this game. It wasn’t just a Discovery Channel documentary of a Tiger devouring an antelope; it was a baby antelope, an antelope just born, with its eyes still closed, its breath still stunted. And it got killed. It got really killed. Killed so bad. I’ve been to some beat downs, some kickback and read a book blood-baths, but there was something almost icky to the dominance. You felt good, but guilty when Cam walked, strolled, loafed, loitered, decided to sure-why-not his way into the end zone for the third score. And with a minute left to go in the half, we were still gunning, still clawing, chewing. We are Auburn 2010, and we use every part of the animal.
As for this evening in Baton Rouge… another angel. Another set of wings. Greg fumbles. Les Miles picks up dirt and sticks it in his mouth on camera. It’s a great day to be an Auburn Tiger. Tomorrow will be a great day to be an Auburn Tiger. And the next. This is our time. Our time. Do not go up Troy’s bucket. I can’t fight this feeling anymore. — JDH.
Pregame 9:40 a.m. CDT: The late breaking didyahear? from yesterday has put the credibility of the story, as it pertains to the Newton’s and Auburn, even more in jeopardy…if such a thing were possible…
Has me almost willing to break out my “Islands in the Stream” 45 again.
Here’s Bitter’s official in-the-paper breakdown.
And here’s yesterday’s guerrilla interview with Newton’s smile before it boarded the bus for Montgomery. –JDH
Pregame 8:45 a.m. CDT: Injection of Awbun Tigah spirit.
Sound files. Smilin’ Jack says:
I love that one. This one too:
Campaign, inspirational signs/posters from Amy Quarles:
The story behind the above poster. Also, for the nerds.
Pregame 7 a.m. CDT: What an incredibly strange few days it’s been. I feel hurt. Angry. I guess this is my outlet. I’m gonna try and focus on the upcoming game and try not. to. think. about. my. hands. around. Florida. coach. throat. I hope our boys in orange and blue can find their own creative outlet. Poor Chatty Choo Choo. Speaking of, UTC is an old, old homecoming foe or “Band Day” foe. Any of you old timers want to clue me in on what “Band Day” is exactly? I’d guess the smart-ass answer would be: “Duh! The band is featured prominently at halftime dumb-dumb!”
According to wikipedia the Mocs have kept the same name since the 1920s, but the mascot has changed over the years. First it was a water moccasin (very cool, why’d they change?), then a moccasin shoe (nicknamed “The Shoe”) (meh), then a Cherokee Indian named “Chief Moccanooga” (that’s pretty good), and now they have “Scrappy” the train engineering mockingbird. “Scrappy” is named after their former coach A.C. “Scrappy” Moore.
As a Tennessee resident for a good chuck of my life, I’d have to say that all of the mascots WORK somehow (well, maybe not “The Shoe”). They are all very “Tennessee.” In fact, the mockingbird is perfect in my opinion. Have you ever seen one mad as hell attacking your pet for getting near their nest? They definitely are very, very, very scrappy. Some might say “feathered madness.” Ole Miss should have contacted UTC for pointers.
Also, our Facebook page broke 600 “likes” yesterday. Just last month I was trying to get us to break the 400 barrier. Wow. Thanks readers!!!
So in OTHER news, I’m beginning to have feelings (and not terrible ones) for a certain columnist employed by al.com. He helped Jeremy out on his Bo story (coming soon!) and now this:
Notice the hard-lined straight mouth hole that looks clamped shut with anger the whole time? Yeah, I’m a little conflicted. He was our voice during the interview. Back in a bit.
Oh, and interested in some Auburn art for the home? This will be unveiled at the game today. Proceeds help fund the raptor center. I think it’s beautiful, but I might be a bit slanted in my opinion. War Eagle! — J.M.
War Eagle! I’ve been following and commenting on various blogs for the past few days since the God2illa story broke. It’s pretty much consumed my waking hours for the past two days. Thankfully I haven’t had much work to do. 2:15pm over this way. Not sure how much of the game I’ll be able to catch today, since I’ve got some stuff going on tomorrow that I need to be preparing for, but since it’s UTC I’m not worried about it. Other than really, REALLY wanting to see what Nick Fairley’s reaction to all this mess is. I really pitty the Mocs QB, right now.
I’ll be checking in as I always do. But somehow I doubt this thread will be as long as the past few games have been, given the unimportance of it. Then again, the God2illa mess, and now the Urbz stuff will cause a lot of conversation.
I think Finebaum is really pissed about this one. He is usually an (entertaining) snake, but he genuinely likes Cam.
He is mad, and I am with him on this one.
War Eagle Walt and AuburnJunky!
Yeah, sad to say that I’ve spent the past day thinking of nothing but this stuff on Cam. And seething about it. I think the push back on the story is happening now thanks in large part to Alabama’s press corps. The cruddy thing is that Auburn’s and the Newtons’ hands are tied a little bit on what they can and cannot say about the whole mess.
I’d like to say I’m going to watch the pirated feed of Gameday. But I think I’m going to go sit on the porch with a cigar and reading “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe” on my Kindle. It’s in the low 60s outside now, and I have to take advantage of that before the temperature dips back down to the “freezing” level. Plus, let’s face it, that’s a better use of my time than watching the talking heads.
Wow, I made that comment even before I read the “for the geeks” link and realized there was a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy reference in the post already. Nice. I really want a “Don’t Panic” skin for my Kindle. Because, let’s face it, e-readers (and somewhat the iPad, though not even Adams thought of something like THAT) ARE the Guide.
Woah! They are the guide! Perfect skin.
Do you know what speculating on things not supported by any facts is? Irresponsible.
That is all.
WDE
Well, crap. Not only does it appear that this game isn’t going to be shown on the pirated feeds, anyway… it’s keeping me from streaming other games now, too. Asking for money, and I’m not paying for that. This is a load of crap. I can’t get ESPN3 b/c all it wants to connect to is English cricket matches, and now my source of pirated feeds (channelsurfing.net) looks like it’s out. Anyone know of any others?
I have rarely been as ready to just watch some FOOTBALL and not listen to any more talk or read any more analysis or UNFOUNDED INNUENDO as I am today, folks.
J.M.– I’ve been saying for the last ~48 hours that a backlash was coming– that once people actually processed the details (or lack thereof) of the Cam story, many people would “push back” as you say. And I think you’re right– it’s happening.
Okay, now it’s football time. I’ll be watching on ESPN3.com and commenting pretty comprehensively here– almost play by play if I can– as much for therapeutic reasons as anything. We’ll see how it goes.
One problem is that I have to use the laptop to watch the game as well as to type, which could pose a logistical problem. We’ll see…
Pre-game question:
CAN LSU BEAT ALABAMA?
Best thing we could have seen to start this game: A smooth, calm, polished Cam leading the team right down the field, throwing the ball, scoring.
And great play by the kickoff team.
7-0 Auburn after one possession.
QC: If you are going to drop punts, I’m glad it’s in this game.
Ouch! Cam makes a good offensive lineman, as well as QB, RB, WR…
Cam to Blake– TOUCHDOWN AUBURRRRRN!
That pass was a lightning bolt! A rope!
Offensive line. We has it.
He’s making it look ridiculously easy. I’m almost certain I saw him updating his Facebook status on his phone before he walked in for the touchdown.
Walked? Leisurely strolled.
21-0 Auburn, still in the 1st, I think.
I’m afraid a bigtime team would’ve completed that pass over D Washington.
The O-line gave Cam FIFTEEN SECONDS to throw/run on that last drive.
Good heavens, could Adams have been any more wide open, even if he’d come down out of the end zone stands to catch that?
TOUCHDOWN AUBURNNNNNNNN!
What just happened with the EP? 27-0 still 1st Q
Our four TD drives thus far involved the following numbers of plays:
2, 6, 11, 3
They have it on our side of the field now! Time to panic?? 🙂
End of 1st Quarter: Auburn 27, UTC 0
Cam Newton 3 TD passes, 1 TD rushing
193 yds passing, 56 rushing
With a win today, the 2010 Auburn Tigers will reach 10 wins.
In modern Auburn history, they will join Tigers teams from the following years in reaching double-digit wins:
1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1993, 1997, 2004, 2006
Darvin Adams was deep to receive that punt, but did not field it.
T-Zac!!! Quick screen– goes EIGHTY YARDS!
TOUCHDOWN AUBUURRRRNNNN!!!!!
Are you kidding?? UTC 99 yards on the kickoff return. Touchdown UTC.
Well… more AU offense without that annoying wait!
Our special special teams rear their ugly heads with a KO return for a TD. 34-7.
Interestingly, we are going to win this game by a jillion and yet still have several things to think about and to work on afterward.
It reminds me of the LSU game: Finding all kinds of issues with our special teams. Here are the three biggest so far:
1. QC drops a punt.
2. Byrum misses an EP.
3. Kickoff team gives up a 99 yd return for a TD.
Onnie Mac!!! 49 yards in the blink of an eye!! TOUCHDOWN AUBURRRRRNN!!!!
41-7 early in the second quarter!
Our last two TD “drives” were 2 plays and 1 play.
Average number of plays per TD drive today: 4.17 plays.
GOOD GRIEF.
UTC: The team that was able to sack Cam. More than once. Wow.
We had to punt. Alert the media.
Great to hear Reggie Slack doing commentary on this game. We still love ya, #17!
I was watching it on Xbox live. Really nice
Dyer with Gus’s new favorite play– the wraparound draw– TOUCHDOWN AUBURN!!!
48-14 as the first half draws to a close.
484 yds total offense
19 first downs
T-Zac: 6 catches for 149 and a TD!
I love ESPN3 on XBOX Live. I will never have to buy a PPV to see Auburn play a cupcake again!
War Eagle!
Back. I’ll be following gamecast while setting up my ruck for this 15.5 mile march, tomorrow. I wish I had a TV right now, I’d love to see if maybe the XBox would pick up ACTUAL ESPN3, rather than the stupid international one that only has British cricket matches. Glad to see the offense was just straight rolling in the first half.
@Walt:
The Xbox version has all ESPN3 content. Every non televised sporting event.
It’s actually pretty cool.
Good gosh, so much for Baylor! Oklahoma State is shelling them, 41-7 in the third.
That may be the case, but the problem is where my connection is coming from. I’m in southeastern Europe and the ISP is Serbian, I believe. So I get the European version, rather than the American. So when I try to access it on my computer, it won’t let me. I don’t know if it would be like that on XBox Live, though.
I bought an X-Box 360 when I moved to IL in 2006, but I got bored with it and sold it after a month. Oh well.
I learned all I needed about Serbian sports (and fans) in Franklin Foer’s HOW FOOTBALL (Soccer) EXPLAINS THE WORLD. Yikes!!!!
UTC is threatening early in the third. I have to hope this is our third string defensive backfield. Then again, we’ve been playing those guys most of the season…
Touchdown UTC. Steady, 80 yd drive with some good passes.
Wow. I hope those are the walk-ons and guys who have barely seen the field. And can we PLEASE teach our DBs how to NOT get pass interference called on them at least once a game?
Is it Barrett Trotter Time??
This third string defense needs some work…
Fannin into the end zone! Way to go, SuperMario. Glad you’re getting some carries and yards and points.
Nice to hear about Fannin getting the TD! He deserves some points on Homecoming.
Looks like our 3rd string run defense needs some work with the yards they’re giving up.
