Google surveys the recruits: Jake Holland

Google surveys the recruits: Jake Holland

In which a recruit’s name is plugged into Google and the bits of information that trickle out–guru ratings, newspaper profiles, YouTube highlights, all that stuff–are synthesized in the hopes of getting a clearer picture of the player we’ll see at Auburn next fall. Previously: Jessel Curry, Craig Sanders, Roszell Gayden, Brandon Mosley, and Demetruce McNeal.

Plainslinks remembers the Beav

Plainslinks remembers the Beav

He sings the songs that remind him of the best times. And so the curtain has fallen–literally, if you remember The Curtain from the Ellis era–on Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum. Track ‘Em has a nice piece of nostalgia for the BEMC that’s well worth a read:
Today she stands only as a tribute to past glories.  Like [...]

Hoops Report, season post-mortem (women’s edition)

Hoops Report, season post-mortem (women’s edition)

So part of my absence last week was spent traveling back in time to the middle of last November, where I met with myself to discuss Auburn’s women’s basketball team.
“Wait, you’re only telling me about the Auburn women’s hoops team? Really? Former Jerry asked me. “You can’t tell me how Auburn does in the Iron [...]

Hoops Report, the regular season post-mortem (Men’s edition)

Hoops Report, the regular season post-mortem (Men’s edition)

There was a blueprint for an Auburn NIT bid: sweep the remaining home games, win one road game, and win two SEC tournament games. The first part went according to plan. The third part we’ll get to in a moment. They had four different chances at fulfilling the second part. After last Saturday’s loss to Alabama, though, they finished the season having whiffed on all four.

I am exhilarated and terrified. Kudos to Jay Tate for getting the first on-the-record commentary from an Auburn coach on this year’s upcoming Big Cat Weekend, a Q&A with Trooper Taylor that finds him both confident about producing similar positives as last year’s event … and hardly reassuring about not producing the same negatives:
On his [...]

Notes from the Beat, 3/1

Notes from the Beat, 3/1

Man, for being the football offseason and having the weekend in Auburn basketball already covered there’s still a ton of news to get to. Taking a look around the Auburn beat, by sport …

Your headliner this weekend was NFL draft combine star Ben Tate, who put together one of the strongest workouts of any running [...]

Hoops Report: the Chase for .500

Hoops Report: the Chase for .500

The first goal the season? Win more games than you lose. For the men, it has only happened twice in the past six season. For the women, the loss of four starters and a roster with just one senior meant that just keeping their heads above water while waiting for better times would be an accomplishment. And while neither team is exactly a good bet to reach the .500 mark, thanks to a pair of big wins both still have shots.

The quarterback situation, post-Rollison

The quarterback situation, post-Rollison

And so Tyrik Rollison has moved on, and we all remind ourselves to quit salivating over high school players who may or may not ever see the field at Auburn*.
Except for the kids in this 2010 class Chizik and Co. just signed, of course. Those guys are going to kick all kind of ass.
But getting [...]

Yeah, it’s an Olympics post. Sorry.

Yeah, it’s an Olympics post. Sorry.

All right, so I know you don’t read this blog for Olympic commentary, just as you’re not going to fire up ESPN.com to find quotes from Demetruce McNeal’s high school coach. But when writing is as much of a habit as it is for your humble Auburn Blogger, and he spends more time over a [...]

Hoops Report: Same-ol’, same-ol’

Hoops Report: Same-ol’, same-ol’

Please, please stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Any of these ones before.
– Last night Auburn lost to Ole Miss by 10 points, a score of 85-75.
– Auburn led by 12 points at halftime, 34-22. In the second half they allowed Ole Miss to shoot better than 65 percent and score 63 points. [...]
