We often refer to ourselves as Auburn Men and Women and, thanks to the guiding words of the venerable George Petrie, feel like we can do so with confidence. We know that if we adhere to the principles of the Auburn Creed, we’ll be able to (accurately) represent our alma mater, and our brother and sisters. In the same regard, we can spot an impostor from a mile away. We know The Creed and we know how to live it.

But what about those who don’t?

Should we view The Creed as an exclusive code for an exclusive club?

One Auburn Man thinks not—or at least not those parts pertaining to the personal polish required for “a sound mind” and a “sound body”—and is working tirelessly to spread the gospel of gentlemanliness, and the understanding that gentleman isn’t a term to be tossed around lightly.

K. Cooper Ray, the 1995 Auburn graduate (read his Alumni Spotlight here), Brooks Brothers bow tie designer, and celebrated “Alabama dilettante” behind SocialPrimer.com, realizes that the modern man hasn’t time to weed through stacks of etiquette books for relevant data applicable to meeting his social requirements. To address this issue, he authored “Bill of Rites for the American Man,” an essential guide of the basic principles that a gentleman must adhere to published in 2011. This comprehensive Social Primer highlights, in just over 100 pages, the skills a man should possess if he strives to obtain the title of gentleman.

It’s an easy read and quick reference for men (and women) that would like a reminder on how men should present themselves in those situations that put our manners to the test.

Our chances of landing that TWER interview grow slimmer by the day.

The Oscar nod for “Best Actress in a Supporting Role” was kind of fait accompli given recent award season trends; Spencer won a Golden Globes Award for “Best Supporting Actress” just last week (watch her acceptance speech here). She’ll be going up against Melissa McCarthy (“Bridesmaids”—Gilmore Girls represent), Janet McTeerand (“Albert Nobs”), Berenice Bejo (“The Artist”) and her co-star in “The Help,” Jessica Chastain.

The 84th Academy Awards show will be presented Sunday, Feb. 26 at Hollywood’s Kodak Theater.

Cox Media Group’s 97.3 The Zone might not be able to get Paul Finebaum away from WJOX, but they are trying something different in sports talk radio in Birmingham, with an Auburn alum sharing the helm.

Rachel Baribeau, Class of 2003, joins Kevin Scarbinsky of the Birmingham News for four hours of sports talk starting at 2 p.m. They call themselves “Baribeau & Scarbo.” (It rhymes. Some might Southernize the pronunciation of her name to rhyme with “caribou,” but the former is the preferred pronunciation.)

First, a little background. When Cox revamped the station to a sports format last year, company reps made a conditional offer to Finebaum, according to the Birmingham Business Journal. And Finebaum’s attorneys went to court to try to get him released from his contract with Citadel Broadcasting, which was recently purchased by Cumulus Media.

For the first few months, The Zone ran a rerun of the morning show “Rick & Bubba” in the 2 to 6 p.m. time slot. It appeared that the station was keeping the slot open for Finebaum, should he be released from his contract with Citadel/Cumulus, which runs until 2013.

But the emergence of Baribeau and Scarbo would indicate that, for at least the short term, The Zone is going in a different direction.

According to Baribeau, the show is also going in a different direction. “We are more interview-driven,” she said. “It is a true sports talk program.” Translation: No trash talk, no cast of characters, and no rumors. In fact, The Zone, in its promos, proclaims, “Sports radio. Not trash radio.”

“Kevin Scarbinsky has been a journalist for 27 years,” she said. “We double-check sources, we get statements from them.”

(Disclaimer: My listening experience for The Zone comprises less than an hour online, to get a sense of the content. Reviews in comments would be appreciated.)

John Olsen, program director for The Zone, noted that the afternoon show, like the morning show with Eli Gold and Stan White (radio game announcers for Alabama and Auburn, respectively), stresses inside information.

“Eli and Stan have Coach Saban’s and Coach Chizik’s numbers on their cell phones,” Olsen said of the morning show. In the afternoon, “We have the people who write the blogs and the articles. These aren’t guys who go from home to station and tell you what they read in the paper that day. They wrote it.”

Baribeau expressed a “large distaste for negative content.” She pointed proudly to the show’s “Pay It Forward” segment on Fridays at 5 p.m., which presents positive stories such as Eric LeGrand, the paralyzed Rutgers football player; former Alabama football player John Croyle, who runs Big Oak Ranch, a Christian home for children; and former Auburn player Steven Wallace, who runs a foundation that reaches out to underprivileged children.

For Baribeau, the radio show is the latest challenge. After graduating from Auburn, where the RTVF major worked for Eagle Eye News and the baseball team, she spent her first five years in a variety of media gigs in Columbus, Ga., including sports talk, Friday night sideline reporting and local broadcast freelancing.

In 2008, she went to work for the Tuscaloosa News, as a multimedia producer for the newspaper’s TideSports site. (Talk about paying your dues.) In 2011, she joined FoxSports and Scout.com as a field reporter covering the SEC West and recruiting. The Baribeau and Scarbo opportunity emerged in late November.

She is encouraged by the initial response to the program. “The feedback has been tremendous,” she said. “People appreciate a choice, an alternative.” The program is also broadcast in Montgomery on 107.5 The Ticket.

Olsen added, “They have developed a pretty quick chemistry. It’s a good alternative for sports fans in the area.”

So what is the long-term prognosis for the program? A medium like radio can be unforgiving and unstable. Olsen is pleased with the content and the feedback so far, at the same time admitting that others above him make the decisions for the program’s future.

Baribeau has been in broadcasting long enough to know the same, but she says, “I appreciate the commitment by Cox Media to do this, and we are doing the best we can.”

Still, Cox Media obviously feels that the Birmingham market can serve as the headquarters for two sports talk shows. Baribeau and Scarbo have tried to set themselves apart with a show that is heavier on the information and lighter on the inter-caller drama.

The brief time that I listened included an MLK Day-based discussion of the “Rooney Rule” (which encourages minority hiring in the NFL), with a sports attorney as the guest.

It’s an extension of Baribeau’s personality. She is open about her Christian faith, and it’s reflected in her attitude and her approach, though not overtly on the program.

How that plays in the rough and tumble of sports talk radio is yet to be determined, of course. Here is hoping she doesn’t catch the ill treatment fans wish they could heap on Tim Tebow.

Fans wanting to judge for themselves can check out 97.3 in Birmingham and 107.5 in Montgomery, or can stream theshow at 973thezone.com. The “Listen” button is at the top.

Your lady will think you look super queue-t.

During the ESPN broadcast of the BCS National Championship Jan. 9, Auburn University football head coach Gene Chizik, a guest commentator, drew heat from Alabama fans nationwide for his choice of a gold tie similar to colors of the Tide’s opponent, LSU.

While Chizik defended the color choice as a “good look,” he could have rubbed it in even more by changing into different colored ties during each commercial break — say a purple, navy or burnt orange tie — had he only been a member of TieTry.com.

TieTry.com, a business built off the Netflix model, is the brainchild of 2003 Auburn graduates Scott Tindle and David Powers. It allows subscribers the opportunity to “borrow” ties just as Netflix allows users to borrow movies.

After watching an episode of ABC’s show “Shark Tank,” in which a panel of wealthy celebrities and entrepreneurs negotiate investment deals with budding entrepreneurs, Tindle and Powers were inspired by one contestant, who applied the Netflix model to children’s toys.

After throwing around several ideas, Tindle and Powers settled on ties. Both are attorneys and each must wear ties at least four days a week.

“I thought to myself, ‘I’m tired of wearing the same ties everyday,’” Tindle said. “So, let’s see if we can actually pull this off.”

After a year of planning and working on the business model, Tindle and Powers finally launched TieTry.com last week, and Tindle said the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

The response has also been fueled by an ironic twist of fate that occurred at almost the exact same time as the launching of the website.

During a recent episode of FX’s hit show “The League,” character Taco MacArthur, played by Jon Lajoie, jokingly brainstormed the idea of a rental tie business called “Neckflix.”

“(Taco’s) obviously a smart guy,” Tindle said with a laugh. “We wish our site would have gone live right before the show, but we’re happy either way.

“We think it’s a win-win all the way around,” he added.

Prices for TieTry.com range from $11.99 per month for one tie at a time to $29.99 per month for five ties at a time.

“Basically, for 25 bucks a month, you could never wear the same tie again,” Tindle said.

Tindle said the business currently has an inventory of approximately 200 different styles of ties, ranging from traditional neckties to bowties.

The business works just like Netflix in that a customer goes online, selects the plan they would like, chooses the tie(s) they would like and TieTry.com immediately ships the selected tie(s).

Customers are allowed to keep the ties as long as they would like, or they can go online to set a queue of future ties they would like to try.

Once TieTry.com receives the returned ties, the customer’s queued ties are immediately sent out.

All ties are inspected upon return, treated for spots/stains, sanitized and returned to inventory. Any tie that doesn’t meet inspection requirements is thrown out and the customer is charged a replacement fee.

“We’ll never send you a tie that I wouldn’t wear in front of a client,” Tindle said.

Following the 1988 Sugar Bowl, in which Auburn rallied to tie Syracuse 16-16 on a Win Lyle field goal instead of going for the touchdown and the win, a Syracuse radio host sent Tigers’ head coach Pat Dye thousands of neckties in protest of the coach’s decision to go for the tie.

In response, Dye signed and auctioned off each tie, raising more than $30,000 for Auburn’s general scholarship fund.

Tindle hopes his business will soon have the same success as Dye did with his ties.

“Maybe we can get (Dye) to be our spokesman,” Tindle said with a laugh.

TWER readers who would like to try TieTry.com will receive a 50 percent discount on the first month by entering promo code TWER.

The guy with the long blond hair walked on and played two seasons at Auburn. He was drafted by the Birmingham Stallions (remember them?) and then went on to a huge career in the NFL. Now Kevin Greene can say he had a Hall of Fame caliber career.

When long bangs and neck rolls were cool.

Greene is still tied for second on the Auburn books for most sacks in a season. He terrorized QBs in 1984 and took 11 of them to the turf.

But he really blossomed in the NFL. He played linebacker for the Rams, Steelers, Panthers and the 49ers across 14 successful seasons, finishing ranked third all-time in sacks and first among linebackers with 160. Greene also collected 26 fumble recoveries, tied for fourth all-time, and snagged five interceptions. He had three returns for touchdowns (two fumbles, one INT) and also registered three safeties.

Greene was named to five pro bowls (’89, ’94, ’95, ’96 and ’98). He played with Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX. The Associated Press called him an All-Pro three times. The Pro Football Writers of America added him to their All-Pro team twice. The Sporting News and the Newspaper Enterprise Association each gave him All-Pro honors.

In 1996, Greene registered 37 tackles, 14.5 sacks and returned a fumble for a score. His effort earned him the NFL Defensive Player of the Year honor from the league and the same accolade from the UPI press service.

He once hit Brett Favre so hard that he made him cough up blood. Sadly he did not get a Wrangler Jeans commercial.

Greene has been a semifinalist in the Pro Football Hall of Fame balloting each of the past four years, but his time is now. The man’s speech needs to be heard at Canton. He has a lot to say about the sort of fantastical life most sports fans can only dream of.

Kevin Greene, here at the 2007 Iron Bowl, has not advocated for a return to leather helmet football. Though you know he would play it.

Off the field Greene holds a degree in criminal justice from Auburn. He also served as a captain during a 16-year Army Reserve. Wikipedia says he’s got his jump wings. Do not mess with Kevin Greene, the paratrooper.

He’s appeared on Wheel of Fortune, been featured in a painful episode of Pros vs. Joes — the title was “Can You Take a Hit from Kevin Greene?” The answer: No.

Lately Greene has been coaching linebackers at Green Bay. This is his third year there. He has one Super Bowl ring. His official team bio basically gives Greene credit for making Clay Matthews the star of his own Fat Head commercial.

(It is the hair. It has Samsonesque properties.)

Also, Greene was a wrestler. Now you know you need to hear the man’s Hall of Fame speech.

Montgomery native Octavia Spencer, who graduated from Auburn in 1994, was recently nominated for Best Supporting Actress by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG Awards) for her critically acclaimed performance as a maid in Civil Rights-era Mississippi in the 2011 film “The Help.”

Today she got the same treatment from the Hollywood Foreign Press (Golden Globes)—an Outstanding Performance By A Female Actor In A Supporting Role nomination. As I mentioned in my review, Ms. Spencer is phenomenal in “The Help,” and in my mind steals the show.

It actually wouldn’t be surprising to see Spencer nominated (and receive) several other awards, including some for breakthrough performance. She’s a Hollywood veteran having appeared in smaller roles in well-known projects such as TV’s “Ugly Betty” and the 2010 comedy “Dinner for Schmucks,” where she showed off her comedic chops. But her performance as Minny Jackson in “The Help” could very well make her a star.

He used to drive the cheerleaders around in for the Wrech Tech parade. They asked him to step out for this photo featured in the opening section of the 1953 Glomerata, but if they knew he was pals with the King of England, they probably wouldn't have.

Bob McBride, the director of youth summer camp Camp Mac in Munford, Ala. since 1957, turned 82 today.

He couldn’t go to the Iron Bowl last year. He was recovering from cancer. He’ll be at the game tomorrow, though.

If Auburn upsets Alabama, he might write a poem—there’s precedent—or he might cause an international incident.

There’s precedent.

In 1948, Bama slaughtered Auburn, 55-0. It was the time first time the two teams had played each other in 40 years. In 1949, Auburn and Travelin’ Travis Tidwell got revenge, stunning the Tide, 14-13. It was a big deal. MacBride, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and a sophomore in electrical engineering at Auburn at the time, was there to see it. After celebrating in Birmingham, he headed back to Auburn.

“We were back at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house that night and we had some brothers that felt [Auburn's win] was such tremendous news that everybody in the world ought to know about it,” McBride says.

He started with a call to George VI, obviously.

“They thought the King of England should be informed,” McBride says. “Back then you had to go through operators and everything.”

Auburn sophomore Bob McBride in 1949.

Somehow—’cause there might have been some liquor involved, who can say—the Pikes convinced the international operator that the call was a life-and-death matter of international importance.

“I’m not sure when we got through to someone at Buckingham Palace but we asked to speak to the King and they said ‘the King is still asleep and cannot be disturbed,’” McBride says. “We said ‘well, tell him that Auburn beat Alabama 14-13, War Eagle!’ I’m not sure if he ever got the message.”

He hopes he’ll have cause to try again tomorrow night, and that he can add the score of another game, one he’s thankful to be able to see, especially in person.

“I’m not back to full strength,” he says, speaking of his cancer recovery, “but I’m doing much better, and hoping for another upset. Which it will be.”

“You never know until the game is played.”

Wednesday night, the Auburn vs. Alabama famous alumni arms race was taken to DEFCON WON. Yes, it’s official (and so much more of a bigger deal than when he was just second in command)—the leader of Apple is an Auburn Man.
(And got his Glom photo taken all four years...)

Wednesday night, the Auburn vs. Alabama famous alumni arms race was taken to DEFCON WON. Yes, it’s official (and so much more of a bigger deal than when he was just second in command)—the leader of Apple is an Auburn Man.

But Tim Cook, Class of ’82, isn’t some just-a-diploma alumni. He is, by all accounts, full of the Auburn Spirit. Coming back “to a place that really feels like home and a place that brings back so many fond memories” for that commencement address wasn’t just an ego trip. He came back because he cares.

And apparently to stock up on swag, yo.

“Auburn has a played a key role in my life and continues to mean a lot to me, as anyone who comes in my office at Apple or my home in Palo Alto instantly discovers,” told Auburn’s Class of 2010. “I have so much Auburn memorabilia, you might think it’s the California outpost of J&M and Anders.”

Not only that, he says he almost didn’t leave Compaq to join Apple in 1998 because California was twice as far from Auburn football than Texas.

(Also, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, watching Auburn win the national championship was likely “one of the best moments of his life.”)

But the sign of true devotion? Dude cared enough to get his Glom photo taken all four years.

Who does that?

An Auburn warrior, that’s who.

“When I was in high school, some teachers advised me to attend Auburn. Some teachers advised me to attend the University of Alabama,” Cook said in his address. “And, well, like I said, some decisions are pretty obvious.”

So yeah, Bama — we’ll see your Sela Ward… and raise you the leader of the free digital freakin’ world.

Recent Auburn graduate Caitlin DeForest could soon be bleeding tiger blood all over the internet.

The Twitter-happy 22-year-old marketing assistant for Cumulus Broadcasting of Nashville recently found out via email that she’s one of only 250 people to make it to the third round of Charlie Sheen’s online competition for a social media intern.

More than 75,000 people applied.

In just a few short weeks, Sheen, who was just fired from the hit CBS show Two and a Half Men, has risen (or at least capitalized) from the ashes of a public meltdown via Twitter, redefining self-promotion with kooky, t-shirt ready hashtag mantras like “#tigerblood” — a reference to his claim in a Good Morning America interview that he has “Adonis DNA” and “tiger blood” — and “#winning” that earned him a record 1 million followers in just 25 hours and 17 minutes.

DeForest was one of them.

“I think he’s done great work,” DeForest says. “I think he’s a lot smarter than people give him credit for. I mean everybody’s talking about him.”

Thanks to her Auburn education, DeForest thinks she can help keep them talking.

“Auburn has an amazing public relations and communications department and I had amazing professors who taught me. I think that has something to do this opportunity.”

What’s the next step in the process? Answer — via YouTube video — one of three questions regarding the power and scope of social media. DeForest chose option two: “In your opinion, what is the best company using social media today and why?”

DeForest won’t say which company she’s going with, but did reveal that she received a few ideas from her former public relations professor Robert French, a social networking guru who’s efforts at bringing blogging to the classroom Auburn’s recent distinction as the third most social media savvy university in the country, behind only Stanford and Harvard (where something called Facebook was started).

The deadline for submissions is midnight Friday; DeForest plans on posting her video to YouTube tonight.

She says she’s been too busy to scope out more than a handful of submissions from the competition (which, of course, supposedly includes at least one porn star), and too competitive.

“I don’t want to go to their YouTube videos and give them a bunch of hits, but a lot of people are kind of sitting in front of the wall and answering the question, which is great, and they have good answers, but Robert French would kill me if I did a video like that,” she says. “He’d want me to make it outside and interesting. I want to answer the questions seriously but I don’t want it to be boring.”

After finding out that she’d made the latest cut, DeForest says she “did what any PR major would do — I sent out a press release,” the idea being to leverage her own 15 minutes of self-made fame for a better shot at landing the job. She’s already been interviewed by local Nashville news outlets as well as some syndicated radio talk shows.

“I think… garnering all this media just by myself is going to help my chances.”

That she graduated from a school whose sports teams are the Tigers — and whose football team just won the national championship — can’t hurt either; DeForest says she’s told several interviewers “I already have Tiger’s blood.”

According to the job description posted on Interships.com, the “#TigerBloodIntern is expected to be proactive, monitor the day-to-day activities on the major social media platforms, prepare for exciting online projects and increase Charlie’s base of followers.”

Sheen currently has 3,156,649 followers on Twitter.

Will DeForest try to sneak a “#WarEagle” into their Twitter feeds if she get’s the job?

“Oh, of course,” she says. “But I wouldn’t sneak it in. I would just do it.”

UPDATE: Caitlin posted her video Friday morning. Link it like it’s hot.

If you’ve ever wanted to watch a bikini-clad Auburn cheerleader fighting for cash — and her life — in the jungle, then ready your TiVos: former head Auburn cheerleader Krista Klumpp (’08) is a contestant on the upcoming season of CBS’ “Survivor”.

Currently working as a pharmaceutical rep in Columbia, S.C., the 25-year-old south Alabama native will be one of 18 contestants trying to survive the wilds of Nicaragua for a $1 million prize. But that’s not the only reason she’s going. In a promotional video for “Survivor: Redemption Island”, the former Miss Phenix City says she is “real excited about not having to wash my hair for 39 days.”

When it comes to gleaning nourishment from slim pickins, Klumpp might actually have an advantage – her grandfather, Steve Riggs, apparently patented the process that turns scrap cheddar into Velveeta.

Graduating in 2008, Klummp was once featured as SportsIllustrated.com’s “Cheerleader of the Week“. Her mother, Blanche Riggs, was a cheerleader at Auburn in the late 70s (alongside this guy).

The new season of “Survivor” premieres Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. CST.
