Held October 30, the event was a fundraiser for the by Auburn chapter of Engineers Without Border outreach efforts in Quesimpuco, Bolivia.

Participants could enter the tournament as a team, or as individuals. No blatching, cobbing or quaffle-pocking was allowed.

When? How? Deliberately? No one knows, at least not yet—footage from the Toomer’s Corner webcams hasn’t been consulted (and may not provide any clues even if it is… we’ll be listening for the call on Finebaum like everyone else.)

The eagle’s concrete beak was found on the ground near the bird’s pillar and given to the university’s Facilities Division.

“The university is looking for some specialty contractors who perform restoration work, and once we find the contractor, we’ll have them make the repairs,” Auburn University director of communications and marketing Mike Clardy told the Opelika-Auburn News. “This is more involved than just putting concrete on the broken area and hoping it sticks. We think it’s worth taking the time to do it right and make sure it stays there for years to come.”

Sharp Shooting: A member of the Auburn University shooting club takes aim at competition held at Ft. Benning in February.

The next Top Shot could be an Auburn student.

Auburn senior SSgt. Adam Fountain, a shooting officer and martial arts instructor in the Auburn University Marines, as well as team commander for the Auburn ROTC Shooting Team, recently sought SGA approval for a shooting club on Auburn’s campus. A decision is expected to come later this week.

According to Fountain, who founded the club, its  main mission is to teach firearm safety and marksmanship, as well as to promote interest and awareness of firearms through recreational and competitive shooting events. After passing a basic weapons safety assessment, the club will be able to teach members ballistic terminology, basic marksmanship, as well as offering more advanced classes designed to teach about the weapon systems used.

Practices and recreational shootings will take place at various locations around Auburn, and at the Auburn Armory, the Uchee Shooting Range in the Tuskegee National Forest, Selwood Sporting Clays in Alpine, AL, and at the Dixie Trap & Skeet Club in Montgomery where members will train for shotgun competitions in trap, skeet, and possibly 5-disk events.

May we suggest a splinter group: Toomer's Patrol.

The club is open to both students and faculty members interested in seeing if they have what it takes as a sharp shooter. Club instructors come from a variety of certified backgrounds—either a civilian national marksman champion or a trained military sniper. If you join, you’ll be learning from the best.

And possibly competing against the best.

If the club is recognized by the SGA— and after that the NCAA—they will go up against shooting clubs from regional schools like UAB, Jacksonville State, Birmingham Southern, Ole Miss, and Kentucky, as well as nationally prominent teams such as Army, Alaska-Fairbanks, and West Virginia.

Here’s hoping they can bulls-eye another national championship for the good guys.

Rich McGlynn complies with Terry Lathan's request for a photo Monday night.

You know it’s been a big year when even your team’s NCAA compliance directors become alumni club circuit rock stars. So yeah, here’s our reporter’s notebook (as scribbled by the weighed down fingers of Terry Lathan, a Mobile Auburn Club advisory board member) from Rich McGlynn’s Monday night speaking engagement with the Mobile Auburn Club at True’s Midtown Restaurant.

Stories told: A younger player gave his three rings to his mother and father because he planned to win more. Nick Fairley smiling at McGlynn on the sidelines down 24 points at Bryant-Denny and saying “I got this.” Normally calm Cam getting rather vocal about winning the game during halftime. Gene Chizik’s pre-BCSNC game insistence to the team that this was a great moment in their lives, but not greater than getting married, becoming a father, raising a family, or playing with your grandchildren.

The Juicy Stuff: McGlynn said the compliance department had to take a conservative win the war, not the battle approach. They knew they were right, but couldn’t talk about it. Had he thought Newton was anything less than eligible? There would have been no Newton. Outcome was exactly what they thought it would be.

Before the event, McGlynn spoke to the Mobile Press-Register regarding the status of Florida running back transfer Mike Blakely.

“We have filed a waiver in an attempt to see if we can have Mike be immediately eligible and we’re in that process right now,” said McGlynn, who spent five years on the NCAA staff before accepting his Auburn position. “We’re working with the NCAA and hoping to get a favorable outcome on it. That’s where we are at this time.”

Blakely would give the Tigers some much need depth at running back where they have only two experienced players in sophomore Mike Dyer and junior Onterio McCalebb.

McGlynn said he hasn’t seen an appeal be impacted by the fact that a player never practiced at his previous school. “But that doesn’t mean anything,” he said. “The NCAA takes each case on its merits and looks and reviews those specific facts and makes a decision.

“We need to make an argument based upon the rule. The rule was not put into place based upon an individual in Mike’s situation in order to be eligible here at Auburn. I believe we put together a strong waiver to that. Now it’s just a matter of seeing what the NCAA has to say about it.”

McGlynn said he expects to have a response from the NCAA within three weeks.

Rachel Inniss gave Bama the Heisman. And she liked it.

As TWER first reported last week, Auburn gymnast Rachel Inniss was booed by Alabama fans after striking her trademark Heisman pose during her floor routine at the recent Tuscaloosa NCAA Regional.

So… it worked.

“I was kind of expecting it, but that’s the kind of attention I wanted anyway,” says Inniss, a senior from Rio Rancho, New Mexico. “I wanted [the pose] to give me more attention than their gymnasts. I definitely heard it… and kind of fed off it.”

Inniss fed off it enough to stick the landing on her last pass immediately afterward and place 2nd in the event with a score of 9.900.

“The first time I did it in front of Alabama,” — the Tigers traveled to Tuscaloosa to take on the Tide in February —  “I started laughing during the routine,” she says. “It got a bigger reaction than I was expecting and put a little more pressure on the last pass. I didn’t want to do the Heisman and then fall, so it gave me a little more motivation.

Inniss says the idea to incorporate the Heisman pose into her choreography came to her after deciding to perform her floor routine to an instrumental version of “All I Do Is Win;” the DJ Khaled hit served as Auburn football’s unofficial soundtrack last season.

“I always like to bring the crowd into my floor routine, and kind of as a joke I thought I could do the Heisman and it actually ended up being a real crowd-pleaser.”

Except in Tuscaloosa; in the video of her performance, boos are heard almost instantly.

Inniss says she thinks that some Alabama fans were waiting to take offense.

“I think some had been following some of the Auburn meets prior to that competition, and maybe had seen a couple of videos, and I had been ranked pretty high in the standings,” she says. “Some of the fans knew it was coming, but for the most part I don’t think anyone knew. I didn’t do it during warm-ups. My team wanted me to save it for the competition.”

Inniss says that, contrary to popular belief, the move isn’t intended as a gesture of affection to Auburn’s Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton.

“A lot of people have come up to me and asked if I’m related to Cam or something,” she says. “Or if I’m dating him.”

Is she dating him?

“No. Not at all. I think I met him one time in passing in study hall, but I really didn’t even know who he was then.”

She’ll get one more chance to impersonate Newton this weekend when No. 18 Auburn travels to Cleveland for the NCAA Championships.

Turns out Auburn fans won’t have to make a tough decision when it comes to voting on the cover of NCAA 12 Football after all: Nick Fairley is the only Auburn man in the running.

When we were told (in confidence — could only refer to it as “lobbying”) before our interview with Nick Fairley that he would be up for cover boy in an online contest requiring a surge of Auburn fan support, we expected a few awkward weeks of #TeamCam vs. #TeamFairley hash tags, annoying invites from factional Facebook groups… and of course Nick’s inevitable crushing defeat — surely The Blessed Individual would be a choice, and The Blessed Individual would surely win,at least the votes of Auburn fans.

But he’s not, so he won’t.

Not even The Smile and the greatest single season for a player in the history of college football could convince the EA suits to risk the PR nightmare were the sound a 1960s toaster oven would make heard in The Tapes proven to be the voice of Cam Newton, or were something equally as damning to surface before the game’s July 12 release date (at least, so goes the best theory as to the snub). Which kind of sucks — because it won’t be proven, and if ever a player deserved that cover, it was Cameron Newton.

The other candiates are Mark Ingram (seriously, EA?), Washington quarterback Jake Locker, and Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray. So, uh, yeah… #TeamFairley.

“You want 14-0.”
