Auburn QB commitment Kiehl Frazier weighed in on the Newton-to-the-NFL discussion over the weekend, telling Sporting News that, if called upon, he’d be ready to fill Auburn’s biggest pair of shoes in a generation as a true freshman if those shoes decide to declare for the draft.
After Newton leaves, Frazier is expected to be a serious candidate to start at quarterback – whether it’s as a true freshman in 2011 if Newton leaves for the NFL after this season — or as a redshirt freshman or sophomore in 2012.
“(Newton and I” talk after just about every game, and he tells me the highlights are every game and his situation and what he’s thinking about the NFL,” Frazier told Sporting News over the weekend. “He’s not definite about anything yet. There’s definitely a chance that he’ll go. If he wins the Heisman, that would probably increase his changes of leaving. Right now I think he’s more focused on getting to the national championship.”

What a great way to start my Monday morning.
False.
I do like the “right now I think he’s more focused on getting to the national championship” part. And I like that Cam has been communicating with Kiehl. Hopefully we’ve got another special athlete with Frazier. But I’d like to see Trotter have a chance as well. I think we’d all be surprised at what he could do with this offense if called upon.
I’m not ready to put too much much faith in many college players leaving early right now, solely based on the labor issues the NFL is facing right now… That’s not to say some Jrs. are going to get bad advice and bolt anyway, but there is a real likelihood that someone (such as Cam) declare for the draft, and end up with nothing….
Right now he’s not in the Top 5 QBs going into the draft, still behind Locker, Mallett, Luck, and even Ponder at FSU and a guy you’ve never heard of in Pat Devlin from Delaware. It only takes one team to fall in love with a guy and make him a first round pick but alot of NFL teams are wary of a QB with a skillset like Newton with little starting experience. Newton will have this information when he makes his decision.
Now for the bad news:
Nick Fairley is likely a Top 10 pick and I would be utterly shocked if he were in an Auburn uniform next year.
I think Cam knows that a portion of his success is owed to his offensive line- and I think he knows that there are a lot of seniors on that line…
I agree with Wes.
What Wes said!
That’s a really good point. Cam is a great athelete, but I’m not sure he’d have as good of a year next year behind an inexperienced o-line. Although I will say that we have some good back-up o-lineman. At the same time, I think Cam would definitely benefit from another year in college (especially is Malzahn returns for another year).
Also… It is pretty much a guarantee that Nick Fairley goes to the NFL after this season. He is up at #8 on Mel Kiper’s big board right now.
I guess regarding Newton and Fairley we will all see in due time. For now…let’s go win a National Championship! War Eagle!!!
WW89,
Whether there is a labor agreement or not, will not stop the NFL draft from happening. The players will be drafted, and would probably still get signing bonuses. They obviously would not receive any game money if the season is cancelled, but he would not receive any if he played one more year at Auburn.
The reality is that he is way ahead of where Jamarcus Russell was at this point in their respective careers. Probably the only better SEC NFL-ready QB was Stafford in the last few years. I do not think there is any doubt that he would be a 1st round pick if he leaves. He may still be raw, but there is way too much talent to completely overlook him.
the fact that we’re losing four seniors from the offensive line is a big reason for Cam to go to the NFL after this season.
Millions of dollar$ would be the #1 reason for leaving. So be it… Enjoy the show for as long as you Cam.
Of course it’s about the money. But playing behind a green offensive line is a great way to get injured and miss out on the money.
We did pretty OK in 2007 with a bunch of freshmen o-linemen. Couple of them were All-SEC freshmen, weren’t they? I think the bellyaching is premature. Mosley is just a junior, isn’t he? We’ve gotten some good Juco transfers in, and some talented recruits the past couple of years. I think our O-line next season will be just fine. We may throw the ball more. But so what.
And the knock on Trotter is not his ability, but that he seems highly injury prone.
Lockout or not, I think losing his offensive coordinator and o-line and the chance his stock will never be higher than it is right now is why Cam is going to leave. And I’m not gonna cry about it either. People who give kids shit for leaving school early are assholes. I’d love if he comes back just like everyone else, but I think we all know next season will be a rebuilding year.
Lest anyone forget, Rozell Gayden has left the team as well, so some of that future talent is already AWOL.
Does anyone else remember how excited we were about Kodi Burns? Just sayin’….
Cam will not leave. The lure of back to back Heismans and the record setting contract that goes along with it will keep him here.
Plus, why would he leave if he can’t play?
The NFL doesn’t give two craps about Heisman trophies. Just saying.
I certainly want him at Auburn for another season, but I would not blame him if he left after this year. Heck, it worked out for Rudy Johnson being a “one and done” for us, and honestly, it did not make me like him any less. It is a big decision for Cam, I hope he stays, but he will have to make that decision on his own, and the lure of big NFL money is hard to ignore!
This kids got a real opporutunity in the pros. its a shame his dad is such a drag. looking for cash from colleges?… what a retard.
I don’t buy the argument that losing the senior O-Line is or will be a reason for Cam to go pro. In order for Cam to flourish in the NFL he has to work on his passing (timing, accuracy, quick release, throwing on the correct foot, etc). NO QUARTERBACK runs the ball for a living in the pros! Can we all agree on this? (e.g Michael Vick’s ribs). So Cam will have to pass for his meal ticket or his time in the NFL could be shortened considerably. This fact coupled with the possible NFL lockout could make it interesting. So, when Cam says he doesn’t know yet, I believe him. Stay tuned!
