Bo Captain, My Captain

‘Ol Bo, who could probably beat an entire arena football team by himself, will serve as the Chicago Rush’s honorary captain for their home opener against the Cleveland Gladiators this Friday night.

I’m trying to come up with some line about Brian Bosworth turning down the honorary captain slot for Cleveland, but it’s not really working.

UPDATE: Here’s some video of Bo at the game.

Oh, wow, I didn’t know that. That’s actually pretty cool.

I’ve actually been kind of looking forward to that game all week (as ridiculous as that feels to say out loud). Arena ball is always good fun, especially in football-starved April. I mean it’s not football, by any means, but it’s a lot closer to football than baseball, so I’ll take it.

And the Cleveland Gladiators have always been my favorite team. Not sure why; maybe it’s the uniforms, maybe it’s because I’m a LeBron/Cavs fan and that somehow subliminally translates. Either way, I’ve definitely got some interest in this game; my little adopted team in the Game of the Week spotlight against the Arena League’s perrenial dynasty, the Chicago Rush. Me and some buddies are gonna head up to a hot wings place and catch it since it’s on NFL Network.

I actually like how they’re doing things this year. The league folded last year, and this year’s league is actually entirely different and new, it just purchased the name and whatnot in the bankruptcy auction or whatever. Now the league is made up of the best, most stable teams from the old AFL, and some elite teams from the old AF2, the minor leagues league. And it just seems like they’re done trying to be something they’re not (since that ran them out of business and all) and it’s back to an old grass-roots feel again. And I like how this season they’re streaming games online live and on demand for free, which is pretty cool, especially if you’ve got the hardware to put it on your TV.

And, since I know someone’s wondering, Anthony Mix is the only notable Auburn alum in the Arena League right now. He’s with the Arizona Rattlers, but apparently he’s injured right now.

I know, I’m a total nerd for following it. But it’s (almost) football, and it’s the spring, so I’m on board.

Has a football player ever worn the uniform better than that. He does look like he could beat the whole arena team. Oh man, what could have been…..
