It’s all but AU-fficial: Tony Barbee is Auburn next men’s basketball coach.
As for the quality of Auburn basketball, this is terrific news. A strong recruiter and an apprentice to the most consistently successful coach in major college basketball, Barbee has had three consecutive years of improvement at UTEP culminating in the at-large NCAA Tournament berth that’s eluded Auburn for the past seven years. He turns 39 in August.
If you were still on the fence regarding the dismissal of Jeff Lebo, the opening weekend of NCAA Tournament action should tell you why this was the right move. This thing is just too much fun, too big a deal, too good to not have Auburn involved. Auburn’s men’s basketball program should be able to regularly compete for NCAA Tournament berths and if it’s not, it’s time to look elsewhere.
