Travelin' Travis was the first. Who will be the 7th?
With the exception of a 27-yard reverse by Tulane wide-receiver Jeremy Williams, Ben Tate had the best Senior Bowl among all the South’s rushers. Tate gained 17 yards on 3 runs for a 5.7 yard average and had the highest YPC of any running back with more than one carry.
Mississippi State workhorse Anthony Dixon had 1 carry for 3 yards while Ole Miss speed demon Dexter McCluster ended up with -0.3 yards on 3 attempts.
While he didn’t win any awards, nor the South the game, Tate’s performance continues a notable tradition of Auburn excellence in the Senior Bowl.
I meant to mention this on Friday, but through the 60-year history of the game, Auburn has produced 6 of it’s MVP’s (four of them quarterbacks), including the bowl’s first – “Travelin’ Travis” Tidwell.
By my count (and it could be off), that’s twice as many as any other team.
Florida State and Penn State both have three.

Auburn’s five other MVP’s are Bobby Freeman, Pat Sullivan, Doug Smith, Stan White and Dameyune Craig.
