The way he was throwing it, I don't think it would have mattered. You've got to be able to make those throws for this O to succeed. I hear what you're saying and I, like Joe Blow, immediately deleted any evidence of this game from my DVR after the final bell, so I may have oversimplified that a bit. Just seemed like we'd have a drive going with mostly runs and then we'd stop ourselves with some sort of passing play on 3rd and short. The fact that most of our penalties were on passing plays probably helps skew my memory as well. And I miss those days of us smelling blood in the water on the opposing team's run defense and asking, "would you like Ronnie Brown left or right?" about 40 times. "How bout a sprinkle of Carnell upside the head?" Here you go.

AU99, Malzahn actually rode his backs pretty hard--1st and 2nd downs were almost always run plays. But it's hard when the opponent knows you can't throw to pick up 10 yards in two running plays, usually--so Auburn would often pick up 2-3 first downs this way, but then the 2nd/3rd go-round have to go the air on 3rd-and-4 or 5, and it wouldn't work. If anything, I think Malzahn maybe should have thrown more often on first down to mix it up and keep Kentucky a little more off-balance, then gone back to the run on typical passing downs, which Auburn had great success with.

That game su-hucked. The atrocious QB play had actually made me forget that we did move the ball pretty well at times (thank you Ben Tate). Looked like Gustav tried to get a little cute at times (see Jeff Mullen/WVU). We ran the ball with quite a bit of success. And then we'd decide to run a trick play, wildcat, or throw it - sometimes in that exact order. I know we run to set up the pass and Todd has to be able to make em pay, but dang, let's go with our horse when he's hot and we're picking up 5 at a time. I think that sort of thing will come along with more experience in the SEC for Gus. You can't always showcase, sometimes you've just got to plow. Hell, Florida may win another title this year doing it.

Thank you for confirming the illegal formation calls. I knew I wasn't crazy! I still didn't see anyone move on the trick play, though. I watched it several times (after several beers, so I could have easily missed it). Had I not deleted the game from my DVR immediately after the game, for obvious reasons, I'd go back and check it out.

I'd also go a little further than saying that the illegal formation calls were "bad". There are two explanations that I can think of why calls like this are made. I'm going to give these refs the benefit of the doubt and say that they have manure for brains. Honestly, I cringe every time I see Ritter's crew calling an Auburn game.
