Man, that is ALOT of in depth research. Mine is much more simple. UT offense is not capable of coming from behind IMO. AU gets out to early lead which forces UT to throw even more than when AU stacks the box. It could be a record day for Tiger D'backs. Also look for Trott, Fannin, and Smith to have huge days. I expect Papa Kiff to bring the heat since I don't really think Todd has been under fire all year. The short dumpoff will be his salvation especially with Revis out and a frosh as his likely replacement.

Sully, that's some cool data and one of many scenarios I can see happening. I would like to think that the second-half run could continue, but offensively, I'd expect Kiffin the Elder to be a lot sharper adjusting than the likes of Carl Torbush (who his own head coach called out) or Jeff Casteel. I would expect the UT offense to have a tougher time in the second half. All the more reason to shut them down in the first half ...

Great analysis, Jerry. However, I feel you're missing some things - play calling and adjustments at halftime and general speed late in the game. Ignoring the Western Kentucky Mongo-vs-St.Mary's-kindergarten-beatdown of a game, the Vols have only scored 8 points in the fourth quarter in the remaining three games., two of them close losses (and presumably winnable games). The offensive punch of Tennesee is clearly in the first half - with over 66% of their scoring in the first half and only two field goals and a safety scored in the final quarter in games. A significant fact when you think that a touchdown in either loss would have likely won it for them.

Are they out of shape? Probably not, but I don't see the adjustment to the game that I see from Malzahn's offense. Rather the opposite - in both the UCLA and Florida games their last quarter play calling was absolutely bizzare.

In contrast, Auburn has played superbly in the later stages of their games, excepting only the 2nd/3rd string breakdowns on defense. In each of the games played, Auburn hits the field running in the third quarter and continues to dominate until the final gun.

I see it this way - Monte's defense slows the Tigers in the first half, but the Vols offense sputters to only a couple of scores and the teams go into the locker room separated by less than a touchdown. In the third quarter, Auburn turns the game around and begins to run wild from midway into the third until the end of the game, slashing the Vols for huge gains and scores. In contrast, the Volunteer offense begins a series of three and outs that dooms their effort and the game is won with five minutes still left on the clock.

Just IMHIO, you understand.

I have to admit that over the past couple of months since discovering your blog, I have turned into a huge fan of your insightful, intense, and - at their best - OCD analyses of all things Auburn football.
After reading this, though, all I can do is imagine you laboring through a slate of games in a weekly pick 'em pool and giggle a little at the teeth gnashing that would surely ensue!
Keep up the great work. I can't get enough...

I don't really see them trying to shut down Auburn's running game, I think diddy Monte will run a 4-2-4 and let Eric Berry do whatever the hell he wants. I think they play umbrella defense by keeping everything in front of them and letting us have the run. They wait for turnover opportunities and play smart defense.

I say Auburn wisely does the opposite when they are on D and stack the box and dare Crompton to throw into double coverage like he so longs to do. Crompton is like a cutter, he just has to cause himself pain.

Of course that's just my opinion, i could be wrong.
